Hi all,

For those of you using the UTF-8 character set with Informix IDS, you will have no doubt come across the issue that Informix uses Byte Length Semantics (BLS).
This is a weakness in Informix IDS, particularly as Genero allows the use of Character Length Semantics (CLS) and other databases also allow the use of CLS.

In this area, Informix IDS is dragging its feet by not allowing you to make full use of UTF-8.

On the IBM Developer web site, there is a request for enhancement to Informix IDS to allow Character Length Semantics that you can vote on.
We would encourage as many Informix database users as possible to vote for this enhancement.

Hi,

I voted this RFE a few months ago.

The loack of CLS support in Informix is blocking us to convert ours databases to UTF-8, the work that we have to do without this functionality is unfeasible, we are considering migrating to another database engine for this reason, but there is also a lot of work to be done and tested in this case.

Some of you have already voted and this is great!

To give more weight, if possible, I suggest that you also add a comment to that IBM Developer feature request.

If they see that you are blocked and consider to use another database supporting properly char length semantics, they may reconsider the priority!
