Title: Genero 2.21.XX with RHEL 2.7
Post by: Najmi N. on December 14, 2016, 10:18:29 am
Hi

We got a client running Genero  2.21.XX version with RHEL 2.5. Recently they bought the tape autoloader. Unfortunately the existing OS doesnt recognized the firmware inside the tape autoloader. The vendor suggested to upgrade the OS to RHEL 2.7.

My question shall the Genero 2.21.XX compatible on RHEL 2.7?. Base on 4js supported paltform document , the OS version was not under 4js supported platform.

2) There was also suggestion given to migrate the RHEL to Centos. Will that supported.

Regards
Najmi

Najmi,

I think you might need to recheck the versions you are quoting.

With respect to RedHat, there was no 2.5, 2.7 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux#Version_history

Secondly the supported platform document for our older versions can be found by clicking on the Archived Releases section of the product and documentation download pages.  These show that 2.21 was supported on RHEL 3,4, and 5, there is no mention of a RHEL 2.5 or 2.7

With regard to your second question on Centos, for a server to appear in our supported systems document that means we have it in our labs, can build ports, and run QA tests against it.  We have a RedHat Server, we don't necessarily have a Centos server.  Centos is built from the same sources as RedHat so the expectation is that if something runs on RedHat, it will run on Centos.  In the very very very unlikely, some would say impossible event that our product behaves differently on Centos than it does on RedHat, it wouldn't be upto us to change our product, it will be upto you to convince Centos that their product is not compatible with RedHat.  A number of sites use Centos quite happily without issue.

Thanks Reuben

There is missunderstanding. Suppose RHEL 7.2. So base on the list Genero 2.21.xx can I say it will not compatible against RHEL 7.2?. We got client who running on RHEL 6.2 but the OS was not on the Genero 2.21.ss  list too.

We need your advise so that we can convince the client.

The Supported Systems documents are the definitive guide as to what is supported.  If you want to use a combination that is outside what is documented, that is your business decision and you do so at your own risk.

In this instance, if you are upgrading a customer that is currently using Genero 2.21 on an old RedHat Server, onto a RedHat 7 Server, then I would suggest you take the opportunity to upgrade to latest Genero version 3.0
